USU sees 6.85 percent increase in spring semester enrollment

Statewide enrollment numbers released by the Utah System of Higher Education show that Utah State University has seen a steady increase in the total head count of students for spring 2011 from last year.

USU's spring 2011 semester has seen 24,820 students in their total headcount, a 6.85 percent increase over 2010's spring semester. The school also saw a 17.4 percent jump in enrollment at its regional campuses. USU's Logan campus enrollment increased 3.9 percent to 15,510 students.

"These numbers represent a new enrollment record," said USU spokesman John DeVilbiss, noting that the numbers on the Logan campus may "level out." USU spring headcount numbers have jumped nearly 17 percent - close to 4,000 students - over the past five years, according to DeVilbiss. Herald Journal

Note: Enrollments in colleges, universities, and other training institutions typically increase during an economic downturn as jobless individuals seek to upgrade skills. In addition, the opportunity cost of attending school drops when jobs are scarce.
